Underhill Arena

Underhill Arena, completed in 1995, features a 200-by-85-foot ice surface used for the Bates intramural and club hockey programs, skating classes, and recreational skaters. The Davis Fitness Center occupies the second floor of Underhill.

In 2019, Bates added a modular turf system in Underhill, the first surface besides ice to cover the arena's concrete.

Used by venues including Olympic Stadium in Montreal, the Nexxfield system is the first of its kind at a NESCAC school. The turf floor will be in place until October, when the ice surface is put in, then re-installed at the conclusion of the hockey and skating season.

Creating an additional 17,000 square feet of new indoor athletic and multipurpose space for the active Bates community, the installation comprises more than 600 panels, each 4 feet by 7.5 feet, linked by Velcro tabs. With a pile height of 1 3/8th inches, the panels offer a safe and consistent cushion for a range of sports and recreational activities.
