No. 4 Amherst shuts out men's soccer 4-0

AMHERST, Mass. -- The No. 4 nationally ranked Amherst men's soccer team scored a pair of goals in each half to shutout the Bobcats 4-0 Sunday afternoon. 

Amherst (7-1-1, 3-1-1) and Bates (3-5-2, 1-5-1) were fairly even on the afternoon in shots attempted, with Bates tallying 10 shots and Amherst taking 12. 

But Amherst doubled up Bates in shots on goal with 10 to the Bobcats' five. 

Sophomore goalkeeper Robbie Montanaro (Belmont, Mass.) made six saves for Bates while Amherst keeper Lee Owen made four in 45 minutes of action.

Montanaro started the match strong, stopping Amherst header attempts in the third minute and the fourth minute respectively. 

Montanaro made another save in the 18th minute before Amherst got on the board in the 21st minute when Christopher Martin found the back of the net for his third goal of the season.

Amherst quickly doubled their edge in the 25th minute Rohan Sood found Bryce Ciambella who lofted a shot into the top of the net to give Amherst a 2-0 lead.

Montanaro stopped another Amherst header attept in the 33rd minute and Bates recorded their first shot on goal in the 39th minute. First-year Peder Bakken (Seattle, Wash.) beat the keeper but Rohan Sood made a defensive save to deny the Bobcats.

A shot off the foot of junior Justin Yacovino (North Bergen, N.J.) missed just high of the crossbar in the 40th minute. 

In the second half, Montanaro made a save in the 50th minute and Bates quickly moved the ball down the field with senior forward Peabo Knoth (Portland, Maine) recording a shot that missed high.

Another good scoring opportunity for Bates came in the 59th minute when senior Matt DiVite (Murray Hill, N.J.) lined up a shot and missed just wide.

Montanaro stopped another Amherst header in the 60th minute but in the 63rd minute the purple & white added to their lead thanks to a goal from Sam Malnik.

A Weller Hlinomaz goal in the 69th minute capped off the scoring for Amherst.

The Bobcats' second shot on goal in the match came in the 73rd minute when senior captain Luke McNabb (Glastonbury, Conn.) forced Owen to make his first save of the afternoon.

Knoth also recorded two shots on goal in the second half and Yacovino made a final push in the 90th minute but was denied by Owen.

The Bobcats return home Saturday to take on Connecticut College at 2:00 p.m.
