LAKE NONA, Fla. -- The No. 24 nationally ranked Bates men's tennis team picked up an 8-1 victory over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Sunday in a neutral-court match played at the USTA National Campus.

The Bobcats (1-1) scheduled the match only yesterday, and earned their first win of the young season over the Division III Fightin' Engineers (0-3).

Bates swept doubles play to set the tone for the morning. Senior Duane Davis (Dix Hills, N.Y.) and sophomore Alex Kennedy (New York, N.Y.) teamed up for an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles, while the Bobcats sustained tougher battles at first and second doubles. Senior Josh Quijano (Los Angeles, Calif.) and junior Jacob Kauppila (Chesterfield, Mo.) defeated Ian Landwehr and Andre Adam 8-6 at No. 1 doubles, before juniors Vidyut Yadav (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and Nick Glover (Austin, Texas) finished off an 8-6 decision of their own at No. 2 doubles, over Josh Giambattista and Joseph Conrad.

Landwehr defeated Quijano in three sets at No. 1 singles to earn Rose-Hulman's lone point, with Bates sweeping the remaining five singles matches. Senior Ben Eckardt (Montgomery, N.J.) made an auspicious Bates debut with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Grant Stamper at sixth singles. Kauppila and first-year Alex Jacobs (Short Hills, N.J.) both won in straight sets, at second and fifth singles, respectively. Junior Jacob Eisenberg (Armonk, N.Y.) came back from a set down to defeat Conrad at fourth singles 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, and Kennedy won in a third-set tiebreaker over Austin Perry at third singles.
