No. 23 men's tennis wins NESCAC opener 9-0 at Connecticut College

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- No. 23 nationally ranked Bates College battled through four three-set singles matches to shut out Connecticut College 9-0 in the Bobcats' NESCAC opener on Saturday.

The Bobcats got off on the right foot with a sweep of the three doubles matches. Senior Josh Quijano (Los Angeles, Calif.) and junior Jacob Kauppila (Chesterfield, Mo.) rose to 4-1 at No. 1 doubles with their 8-6 win over Guillermo Garcia and Will Cannon. Juniors Vidyut Yadav (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and Nick Glover (Austin, Texas) also rose to 4-1 at No. 2 doubles as they defeated Julian Tien and Johnny Cisell 8-4. Senior captain Duane Davis (Dix Hills, N.Y.) teamed up with senior Ben Eckardt (Montgomery, N.J.) for the first time at No. 3 doubles and defeated Sang Jin Song and Zachary Danz 8-4.

Quijano won for the third straight time at No. 1 singles, topping Garcia 6-2, 6-4. Eckardt rose to 2-0 at No. 6 singles with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Sean Jenkins.

Bates' four other singles wins all went into a third set, with Kauppila defeating Song 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2, junior Jacob Eisenberg (Armonk, N.Y.) defeating Tien 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3, sophomore Alex Kennedy (New York, N.Y.) beating Henry DeCoster 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 at No. 4, and first-year Alex Jacobs (Short Hills, N.J.) defeating Cannon 6-4, 2-6, 11-9 at No. 5.

The Bobcats (3-2) will hit the road next weekend for three matches in three days in the Mid-Atlantic, beginning Friday 3pm at Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va.
