WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The Bates men's tennis team scored points at No. 2 doubles and No. 1 singles in a 7-2 loss at No. 9 nationally ranked Williams College on Sunday, in the Bobcats' final match of the regular season.

Despite the absence of senior captain Josh Quijano (Los Angeles, Calif.) and his 10-4 singles record this season at the No. 1 position, Bates scored at No. 1 anyway, as junior Jacob Kauppila (Chesterfield, Mo.) stepped up to defeat Williams' No. 1, Austin Barr, by a 7-5, 6-3 score. It is the ninth consecutive singles victory for Kauppila, with the previous eight of those wins coming at the No. 2 spot. Kauppila has an 11-2 record in singles play this season.

Kauppila also teamed up with sophomore Alex Kennedy (New York, N.Y.) to win Bates' other point, an 8-7(3) victory over Ananth Raghavan and Arturo Kam, rising to 4-1 as a doubles pair.

The Bobcats finish the season with a 5-12 record, including 3-5 in NESCAC play. They are unlikely to be one of the six teams selected for next weekend's NESCAC Championship tournament, but hope to earn individual invitations to the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships next month.
