Softball's strong start continues with 8-0 wins over Lesley and Sage

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Bates offense scored a combined 10 runs in the fifth inning alone over the course of two 8-0 wins Tuesday afternoon over Lesley University and The Sage Colleges at the Spring Games. 

Bates (5-1) looks to keep the strong start going on Thursday when the Bobcats take on Wheaton (Mass.) at 9am and Simmons at 1:30pm. 

Bates 8, Lesley 0 (5 innings)

The Bobcats scored four in the fourth and four in the fifth to win 8-0 in favor innings over Lesley University Tuesday afternoon.

Senior captain Kirsten Pelletier (Sidney, Maine) pitched all five innings, striking out six batters in the victory. Pelletier (3-0) walked two and allowed just three hits in the contest.

Kara Haga (0-2) matched Pelletier pitch-for-pitch until the Bobcats broke through in the bottom of the fourth.

With one away, sophomore Eliza McNulty (Cambridge, Mass.), first-year Kama Boswell (Bellevue, Wash.) and sophomore Emily Samar (New York, N.Y.) smacked back-to-back-to-back singles, loading the bases. Then with two down, sophomore Kennedy Ishii (Honolulu, Hawaii) singled home McNulty and Bates led 1-0. Sophomore Janell Sato (Honolulu, Hawaii) reached on an error, which allowed Boswell and Samar to cross the plate.

Up 3-0, the Bobcats got another run when junior Mary Collette (Watertown, Conn.) singled in Ishii. 

Then the Bobcats ended the game in the bottom of the fifth, with four more runs. Senior captain Julia Panepinto (Buffalo, N.Y.) drew a walk to start the frame. Pinch hitter junior Dulce Alcantara (Far Rockaway, N.Y.) singled as well and two outs later, back-to-back Lesley errors put the Bobcats up 6-0.

Sato followed with a walk-off double off reliever Ilana Zack, plating a pair of Bobcats to trigger the eight-run rule.

Bates out-hit the Lynx (0-5) 11-3 in the contest and benefited from three Lynx errors on the afternoon. 

Ishii went 3-4 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI to lead the Bobcat offense. 

Bates 8, Sage 0 (5 innings)

Junior Payton Buxton threw a complete game one-hitter and the Bates softball team scored six runs in the top of the fifth to defeat the The Sage Colleges 8-0 Tuesday afternoon.

Buxton (Middlebury, Vt.) struck out three and did not walk anyone in the victory. And the Bobcats got on the board against the Gators (4-4) in the top of the third. Samar drew a lead-off walk against Sage starter Katerina Lagace (2-2) and junior Caroline Bass (Newton, Mass.) tripled her home. 

Bates added another run in the top of the fourth when Panepinto launched her first home run of the season and the eighth of her career. 

Buxton (1-1) retired the side in order in the bottom of the fourth and the Bobcats put the game out of reach in the top of the fifth.

With one out, Bass singled and stole second. Ishii followed with a single of her own and Bass advanced to third. Ishii stole second Sato drew a walk, loading the bases. Collette greeted new pitcher Taylor Dicranian with a single, plating Bass. Sophomore Aleah Pagan (Orinda, Calif.) followed with an RBI single of her own and Panepinto drove in Sato with a sacrifice fly. McNulty doubled in a pair and junior Abra Kaplan (Oak Park, Ill.) singled home McNulty, making the score 8-0 in favor of the Bobcats.

Buxton worked around a Bates error, tossing a scoreless bottom of the fifth to end the game. The Gators managed just an Emily Agate single in the second against the Bobcat right-hander.

Bass, Ishii and Pagan all went 2-3 in the contest and the Bobcats piled up 10 hits in the victory.
