NORTON, Mass. -- Sophomore Margaret Smith scored five goals on five shots and added an assist to lead the Bates women's lacrosse team to a 16-3 non-conference victory at Wheaton College on Wednesday.

The Bobcats (2-0) also received three goals and two assists from senior Katie Allard, three goals and one assist from sophomore Kathryn Grennon, one goal and three assists from senior Sydney Howard, and two goals from sophomore Summer Dias.

Smith (Wilton, Conn.) has 12 points (8 goals, 4 assists) through two games, after totaling seven points in her rookie season.

Junior Liv Sandford (Kennebunk, Maine) controlled 12 draws out of a total 20 in the game, giving Bates a 16-4 advantage.

Wheaton's Lilly Callahan scored unassisted 2:05 into the game to give the host Lyons (0-2) an early lead. But Allard (Ridgewood, N.J.) fed Grennon (Cape Elizabeh, Maine) to tie it up a minute later, and Bates proceeded to reel off 12 unanswered goals before halftime.

Allard scored the go-ahead goal on a free-position shot and made it 3-1 on a Smith assist. Smith then scored back-to-back goals, followed by Grennon tallying twice in a row, with both players receiving assists from Howard (Ashland, Mass.), to make it 7-1 with 15:33 still to go in the half. Twenty-one-seconds later, Howard scored on a free-position shot, and with 14:30 to go, Grennon assisted Smith for Bates' third goal in a span of 63 seconds.

Dias (Newton, Mass.) made it 10-1 with 8:21 to go in the half. Allard's free-position goal with 2:14 to go was followed by Smith's goal with five seconds remaining, the Bobcats' fifth free-position goal of the half.

Senior Eliza Statile (Ipswich, Mass.) played the first half in goal for Bates and made five saves and added a ground ball to earn the victory. Sophomore Rachael Deptula (Durham, N.H.) minded the goal for the second half, for the second straight game.

Only two goals were scored in the first 16 minutes of the second half, with Wheaton again opening the scoring on a tally by Casey Kaplan, which was answered three minutes later by Dias's second goal, on Howard's third assist. Kaplan scored again with 13:57 to go to make it 13-3. Bates added three more goals over the final 11 minutes -- one by Smith, followed by first-year Kate Loughlin's (Portsmouth, N.H.) free-position shot and junior Gianna DiPinto's (Grafton, Mass.) unassisted tally.

The Bobcats will open NESCAC play Saturday at noon at No. 2 nationally ranked Middlebury, a 2018 NCAA finalist.
