WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Bates women's cross country team outscored Colby convincingly 80-30 in its first official meet of the 2016 season, the Bates-Colby Class Wave Races, Saturday at Colby.

Under the annual meet's modified scoring system, both teams' seniors and sophomores combined to race against one another, and first-years and juniors in the other, with the top five finishers scoring points, and the higher score winning. The Bobcats won in commanding fashion in both races by a 40-15 score.

Senior captain Jessica Wilson (Cumberland, Maine) ran the fastest time of the day, winning the senior/sophomore race in 14:41 over an approximately 2.44-mile course and leading a sweep of the race's top six places. Senior captain Molly Chisholm (Wayland, Mass.) took second in 15:42, followed closely by sophomore Wendy Memishian (Medway, Mass.) in 15:43, sophomore Katie Barker (Burlington, Vt.) fourth in 15:51, sophomore Sarah Rothmann (Andover, Mass.) fifth in 15:53 to round out the scoring, and sophomore Hannah Austin (North Yarmouth, Maine) sixth in 16:23.

Bates also swept the top five places in the first-year/junior race, led by the junior tandem of Katherine Cook (South Burlington, Vt.) and Mary Szatkowski (Buxton, Maine) in first and second places with identical 15:36 times. First-year Olivia LaMarche (Lynnfield, Mass.) was third in 15:48, followed by junior Callie Reynolds (West Hartford, Conn.) in fourth place (16:16) and first-year Megan Clark (Manchester, Mass.) taking fifth in 16:17.

Bates hosts the Pineland Super XC meet next Saturday at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester, against Tufts, WPI and Wellesley. The women's race begins at 11:45am.
